Sam Neill (real name Nigel John Dermot Neill) DCNZM OBE, was born on 14th September 1947 in Omagh, Country Tyrone in Northern Ireland. He is a New Zealand actor, best known for his roles in “Jurassic Park”, “Merlin” and “The Hunt for Red October”.
Neill’s career started as a director for the New Zealand National Film unit, then in 1977 he was cast in local film “Sleeping Dogs”. His first major international role came in 1981 in “Omen III: The Final Conflict”. He has also appeared in TV dramas and comedies in the UK including: “The Tudors” and “Peaky Blinders”, as well as in New Zealand and the USA.
He won a Golden Globe award in the UK for his role portraying a real-life spy, Sidney Reilly, in “Reilly, Ace of Spies”.
He started calling himself “Sam” when he was at school in New Zealand because there were so many other Nigel’s at the same school.
Although he is from New Zealand, he was born in Northern Ireland because his father, an army officer, was stationed there while serving with the Irish Guards.

Sam closely follows politics, across the world and is a supporter of both the Australian Labour Party and the New Zealand Labour Party. In 2014 he commented on the Australian government’s treatment of boat people as well as their alliance with Japan.
He feels that Australia can often follow American politics, blindly, and looks forward to the day when they develop clear and independent foreign policies.

The majority of Sam’s time, when not acting, is taken up with his biggest passion – wine. He manages and works on this winery that he owns in New Zealand.
Neill owns a winery called Two Paddocks, which consists of a vineyard in Gibbston and two near Alexandra, in New Zealand’s South Island.
He has a New Zealand, British and Irish passport but says that he identifies most with his Irish roots.
In 1993 he was awarded an OBE for his services to acting.

Sam has been married to Noriko Watanabe, a make-up artist, since 1989. They have one daughter together and Neill is stepfather to Noriko’s daughter from her first marriage.

Neill had another son in his early twenties who he gave up for adoption. The two were later reunited.
